Perhaps the most pervasive error involves treating wax like cooking oil—just heat it until it melts. Different waxes have distinct personalities. Paraffin, soy, beeswax, and coconut each demand their own specific pouring temperatures. Adding fragrance oil to wax that is too cool results in poor scent throw, as the molecules fail to bind properly. Conversely, overheating not only burns off those precious essential oils but can also discolour the wax and ruin its texture. Measuring scent by “a few drops” or “until it smells right” is a recipe for disaster. Every wax type has a maximum fragrance load, typically between 6% and 12% of the total wax weight. Exceeding this limit does not create a stronger candle—instead, it causes oil to pool on the surface, seep out of the finished candle, and even pose a fire hazard. The correct approach is to use a precision scale and calculate the oil weight based on the wax weight. Remember that fragrance oil should be added at the right temperature and stirred slowly for at least two minutes to ensure even distribution.

Wick Selection and Centering

Choosing a wick is not a guessing game; it is a careful calculation based on the diameter of your vessel and the type of wax. A wick that is too small will tunnel, leaving a ring of wasted wax against the glass. One that is too large produces a smoking, sooty flame that devours the candle too quickly. Beyond selection, the physical placement is equally critical. Even a perfectly sized wick will fail if it drifts off-centre. Using a dedicated wick centring tool or simply securing it with chopsticks and a binder clip while the wax sets can prevent the lopsided burn that ruins an otherwise perfect candle.

Rushing the Cooling Process

Patience is not merely a virtue in candle making; it is a technical requirement. Placing a freshly poured candle in the refrigerator or near an open window to cool faster is a classic weekend mistake. Rapid cooling creates thermal shock, leading to unsightly cracks on the surface and poor adhesion to the container. In soy wax, it encourages the formation of large, grainy crystals that result in a pitted, frosted finish. Cleaning each vessel with rubbing alcohol and warming it slightly in an oven before pouring can dramatically improve adhesion. Additionally, the height from which the wax is poured matters. Pouring from too high introduces air bubbles that become trapped, marring the surface and weakening the structure. A slow, low pour, aiming for a steady stream just above the rim, minimises turbulence and yields a smoother top.

Neglecting the Second Pour

One of the most disappointing revelations for new candle makers is that a single pour rarely produces a flawless top. As wax cools, it contracts, often leaving a deep sinkhole around the wick. This is perfectly normal, and the remedy is simple: reserve a small amount of wax, reheat it to a slightly higher temperature than the initial pour, and carefully fill the depression about an hour later. This second pour, often called a “topping off”, saves the candle from an ugly crater and creates a professional, level finish. Skipping this step is a choice to settle for mediocrity.

The Cure Before the Burn

The work does not end when the wax finally hardens. The most overlooked step in the weekend candle-making process is the cure time. While the candle may feel solid within hours, the chemical bonding between the wax and fragrance oil continues for days or even weeks.
